Thank you for a great site! I've been trying to locate my gggrandfather for the past 3 yrs and with the name SMITH, I've hit a deadend. Upon reading the biography of James A. Smith, I may have hit a goldmine. The biography states that James A. Smith was with the 6th Il CAV during the civil war. My grandfather John W. Smith was in the 6th Il CAV during the civil war as a young man b. abt 1839-40 in Johnson Co., Il. d. 1870. John m. Nancy Harper in Johnson Co. in 1859, both are buried in the Reynoldsburg Cemetery along with their two sons and their wives. I have been unable to locate any information on John W. after the civil war. It is believed that someone in the family was a Regulator and disappeared.
I would be eternally grateful if you could pass this along to someone who might know if this is the family of my John W. Smith.
